DEPARTMENT:     PATIENT CARE SERVICES

 

JOB TITLE: REGISTERED NURSE ADDENDUM SPECIFIC TO:

EMERGENCY SERVICES DEPARTMENT

 

I.   JOB SUMMARY:

The RN advocates and utilizes the nursing process in the care of all age populations along the health continuum.  The nursing process includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation.  The RN performs this process as part of the care team recognizing each person as important in the care of the patient/family.  The RN facilitates this team approach by directing, supporting and teaching team members.  The RN is unfailingly positive in job performance and promotes excellent care and service by all actions and words within the work place.

 

The RN is knowledgeable regarding the professional scope of practice, and nurse practice standards.  The RN meets these standards legally and professionally.

 

The RN is flexible and makes care decisions based on the condition of the patient, reassessing and prioritizing according to individual need.

III.   ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Emergency nursing coordinates the activities and patient care in the Emergency Department.  This includes triage, primary and secondary assessments, emergency intervention and evaluation, and patient education.  Emergency nursing care ranges from disease and injury prevention to life- and limb- saving measures.

Characteristics unique to emergency nursing practice include:

1.   Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of emergent, urgent, and nonurgent

individuals of all ages, often with limited data base.

2.   Triage and prioritization

3.   Disaster preparedness

4.   Stabilization and/ or resuscitation of various illnesses and injuries

5.   Crisis intervention for unique patient populations, such as sexual assault, psychiatric, or homeless persons.

6.   Provisions of care in uncontrolled, unpredictable, and potentially violent situations.


7.   Maintenance of “chain of evidence” in potential criminal cases

8.   Code blue team leader

9.   Provides service with respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of the patient unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of the health problems

10.   Assesses and supports the psychosocial, and bioethical needs of the of the patients family and significant others.

Based on the broad range of  patients, emergency nursing is involved with other groups in a variety of activities such as disaster planning, organ and tissue procurement, injury prevention campaigns, and prehospital care involving law enforcement , life flight, social services and EMS (ambulance) personnel.

 

 

V. QUALIFICATIONS:

A.     Specific Licensure, Certification, Registration:

ACLS

PALS OR ENPC (pediatric emergency nursing)

TNCC OR TERN (trauma nursing)

 

B.      Specific Job Knowledge:

Minimum of two years critical care experience

Successful completion of hospital and emergency department orientation

 

VI. PHYSICAL DEMAND LEVEL:

 

Medium to Heavy........ 51-75#
