History of the Minerva Society: It all began with a bug not much bigger than the dot on an "i" and an internationally known medical researcher, Dr. Willy Burgdorfer, who lives and works in the Bitterroot Valley. The Minerva Society Lecture Series debuted in 1990 with a talk by Dr. Burgdorfer, who discovered the tiny tick which transmits Lyme disease. Since then, more than 8,000 Western Montanans have been informed and enlightened by free healthcare lectures offered by The Minerva Society.
Lectures have turned the spotlight on topics such as Attention Deficit Disorder, the Prozac controversy, preventive health care and other topics that affect us personally such as disease and new treatments. Healthcare spending, dying with dignity, medical ethics, and other cutting-edge topics have been a hallmark of Minerva lectures. Some speakers are well-known authorities on their topics; others are specialists from our local medical community. The lectures offer Western Montanans the opportunity to listen to the latest information about an issue and to ask questions or to voice their own concerns. A Minerva Society lecture is a lively mixture of discussion and dialogue about the healthcare developments and controversies that affect our lives.
