NICU
Our Level III NICU is run by a team of medical experts, providing a full range of care for infants born sick or premature. The staff in the NICU, the majority of whom are specialty certified in neonatal intensive care, provide high quality, top-notch care. Our approach is family-centered with an emphasis on developmental care. Since opening of the NICU in 1976, we've touched the lives of thousands of families in Montana and Idaho.
- Bed capacity: 32
- Serving families since 1976
- Care level: Level III with Surgery, the highest level in the region
- Provider coverage: 24/7 on-site neonatology providers
Recognized excellence

The American Academy of Pediatrics classifies NICUs into four levels. As the highest level of care available in our region, our Level III NICU with Surgery was the first in Montana to receive this designation from the AAP Neonatal Excellence Program — and our 32-bed unit remains the largest such program in the state.
Unlike many NICUs in Montana, our neonatology providers are on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week – ensuring immediate, around-the-clock care without after-hours delays for the most critically ill newborns.
Comprehensive care
NICU Flight Team
A dedicated transport team staffed by specially trained bedside NICU nurses, respiratory therapists & neonatal nurse practitioners, equipped to safely transfer the most vulnerable newborns from across Montana to our care.
Advanced technology
Modern imaging, monitoring and respiratory support systems, backed by a team of neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists and specialists who are experts in neonatal care.
Private & flexible rooms
Our 32-bed unit includes private rooms as well as flexible room configurations to accommodate twins and triplets, keeping families together.
Pediatric specialists
Pediatric surgery, gastroenterology, cardiology and ophthalmology are readily available – all in one place, when your baby needs it most.
Family-centered care
We believe parents are essential partners in their baby's healing. Our family-centered approach emphasizes developmental care practices including nesting and skin-to-skin contact – also known as kangaroo care. Parents are encouraged to spend as much time as possible with their babies, and rooming-in is available prior to discharge for families preparing to take premature infants home.

We know that being close to your baby matters. The Ronald McDonald House is located right on our campus, providing a comfortable place to stay for families who have a baby in the NICU. Families can rest, recharge, and remain near their newborn throughout their care journey – without the added stress of finding or affording lodging away from home.
